The Whale Watch: How to Trade Alongside (and Against) the Biggest Positions in a Market

Someone just dropped $50k on YES. Are they a genius, an insider, or a guy who read one tweet? Here's how to tell.

You're browsing Polymarket and you see it: a single position worth $127,000 on some obscure market about a Fed nominee. The obvious question — *do they know something?* — is the wrong one.

The right question is: *what would I do if they didn't?*

Big positions carry information, but not always the kind you think. Learning to read them is one of the most underrated skills in prediction markets. Here's the framework.

Three Types of Whales

Not all size is smart. Broadly, whales fall into three buckets:

The Sharp. Trades multiple markets, sizes based on edge, doesn't chase. Their positions tend to build slowly over hours or days. When they show up in a market, price usually moves in their direction and *stays* there. They're right often enough that fading them is a losing strategy over time.

The Conviction Degen. Rich guy with a strong opinion and no edge. Dumps a huge position all at once, often near a local high or low. Frequently identifiable because they only trade one or two markets and their PnL history looks like a rollercoaster. These are the whales you want to fade — but only when the fundamentals back you up.

The Hedger. Someone with real-world exposure who's using the market as insurance. A campaign staffer betting against their own candidate. A weather-dependent business hedging a hurricane market. Their trades don't reflect what they think will happen — they reflect what they can't afford to have happen. Ignore their directional signal entirely.

How to Tell Them Apart

On Polymarket, wallets are public. Click through. Look at:

- Trade history. Do they win? Sharps have positive PnL across dozens of markets. Degens have one big score and a graveyard.

- Entry style. Did they build the position over time (sharp) or slam it in one order (degen or hedger)?

- Market diversity. Traders active across politics, sports, and crypto tend to be sharper than single-market specialists — unless the specialist is *really* specialized, which is its own signal.

- Timing. Sharps often enter *before* news catalysts. Degens enter *after*, chasing momentum.

On Kalshi you don't get wallet-level data, but you can read order book depth and time & sales. A single $20k+ limit order sitting on the book is a very different signal than $20k crossing the spread at market.

Trading With a Whale

If a sharp is building a position and you agree with the thesis, follow them — but size smaller and get in at a better price than they did. You don't have their edge or their bankroll, so you can't take their variance.

The mistake beginners make: seeing a whale enter at 62¢ and paying 68¢ an hour later because they feel late. If you can't get in near their price, you probably shouldn't get in at all.

Trading Against a Whale

Fading a whale is a legitimate strategy but requires two conditions:

1. You've identified them as a degen or hedger, not a sharp.

2. The price they moved the market to is meaningfully off from fair value.

A conviction degen buying YES from 40¢ to 55¢ in ten minutes is offering you a free 15 cents of edge — *if* fair value is still 40¢. If the fundamentals shifted underneath, they might just be early.

The Real Lesson

Whales aren't oracles. They're just traders with more money than you, and money doesn't correlate with being right. The signal isn't the size of the position — it's the *pattern* around it.

The traders who consistently make money in prediction markets aren't the ones who spot whales. They're the ones who correctly guess which kind of whale they're looking at.
