The Volume Tell: What Order Flow Actually Tells You About a Market

Price tells you what people think. Volume tells you how much they believe it. Learn to read both.

You've seen it a hundred times. A market sits at 62¢ for three days. Then over four hours, it drifts to 71¢. No news. No tweets. No debate performance. Just... movement.

What happened? Someone with size showed up. And if you weren't watching volume, you missed the only signal that mattered.

Price Without Volume Is a Rumor

A prediction market price is a weighted average of everyone who's currently betting. But not all bettors are equal. A $50,000 buy from someone who's been right on 30 straight markets is not the same as fifty $1,000 buys from Twitter.

The raw price can't tell you which one moved the market. Volume can.

When you see a price move, ask three questions:

1. How much notional volume traded during the move?

2. Was it concentrated in a few large orders or spread across many small ones?

3. Did the move hold, or did it snap back within an hour?

Each answer tells you something different about who's on the other side.

The Four Volume Patterns Worth Knowing

Grind-up on steady volume. Price climbs 3-5¢ over several hours with consistent, moderate trading. This is usually genuine information diffusion — someone connected to the outcome is buying, and other sharps are noticing and following. These moves tend to stick.

Spike-up on one giant print. A single huge order rockets the price 8¢ higher, then it settles 3¢ back down. This is a whale making a directional bet, but the market is telling you no one else agrees yet. Sometimes the whale is right. Sometimes they're a Polymarket legend about to become a cautionary tale.

Slow bleed on thin volume. Price drifts down over a full day, but total volume is a fraction of the market's usual daily flow. This is often just the yes-holders slowly capitulating out of boredom. Frequently a fade opportunity if fundamentals haven't changed.

Chop on massive volume. Price barely moves but volume is 5x normal. Two sides are fighting. Someone thinks they have edge, and someone else — with equal size — thinks they're wrong. Watch which side breaks first.

How to Actually Check This

Polymarket shows trade history on every market page. Sort by size. If the last 20 trades include three prints over $10,000 all buying YES, that's a signal. If they're all $200 retail-sized orders, that's noise.

Kalshi's order book is thinner but cleaner. You can literally see resting size at each price level. A market with $50k stacked on the bid at 34¢ and $2k on the ask at 36¢ is not a 35¢ market. It's a 34.5¢ market with someone very willing to defend the downside.

The Trap: Fake Volume

Wash trading exists. So does self-crossing to move a price before dumping into liquidity. On thinner markets, a determined trader can print misleading volume for a few hundred bucks in fees.

Protection: cross-reference. If volume spikes but the order book depth hasn't grown, and no other correlated markets moved, be suspicious. Real conviction usually leaves footprints in more than one place.

The Mental Model

Stop reading prediction markets like stock charts. They're not. A prediction market is a live argument between people with money, and volume is how loud each side is shouting.

A quiet market at 60¢ and a screaming market at 60¢ have the same implied probability and completely different information content. The first one is a guess. The second one is a fight.

You want to know which side is winning the fight before you pick a corner.

Most traders check the price and move on. Spend the extra 30 seconds on the tape. It's usually the difference between trading the market and trading the noise around it.
