The Market Is Snoozing on a Boring Republican Hold
One special election is priced like a coin flip in a swing seat. It's not a swing seat. Free money?
It's mid-August, the NFL preseason is putting people to sleep, and Congress is on recess doing whatever Congressmen do when nobody's watching (nothing good). Which means the smart play right now isn't chasing Week 1 lines — it's picking through the special election markets Polymarket forgot to update. We found two.
Will the Republican Party win the NC-09 House seat?
Market has YES at 80¢. We have it closer to 93¢.
NC-09 is an R+8 to R+10 district with an incumbent. That's not a swing seat. That's a seat where the Republican wins unless they get caught doing something so weird it makes cable news for a week straight.
The edge here is that Polymarket is pricing this like it's competitive. It isn't. Historical hold rates for districts this red with an incumbent are north of 95%. You're getting 80¢ on what should be 93¢+. That's the fattest edge on the board today — A grade, and the AI didn't blink.
What kills it: scandal, resignation, or some black swan candidate drama between now and election day. Special elections get weird. But at this price, you're being paid to eat that variance.
NATO x Russia military clash by October 31, 2026?
Market says there's a 9% chance NATO and Russia directly clash militarily in the next ~2.5 months. We say it's closer to 3%.
Position: NO at 91¢.
Yes, we know. Buying NO at 91¢ to make 9¢ is the definition of picking up pennies in front of a tank. Literally. But the base rate for a direct NATO-Russia military clash in any given ~10 week window — even with Ukraine grinding on — is genuinely tiny. Proxy stuff, cyber stuff, airspace violations, none of that resolves YES. It has to be an actual shooting clash.
The market keeps this priced at 9% because tail-risk headlines make people nervous, and nobody wants to be the guy who sold NO the week before WW3. Understandable. Still a +EV hold.
What kills it: literally the thing everyone's scared of. If it happens, you lose 91¢ and also probably have bigger problems than your Polymarket balance. Size accordingly. This is not a max-bet. This is a small clip you leave on and forget about.
The Honest Part
Both of these are A-grade for a reason: the math is clean, the edges are real, and neither requires you to have a hot take on anything. You're just betting that boring things stay boring — a red district stays red, and two nuclear powers keep not shooting at each other directly.
That's the whole thesis. Fade the drama premium.
We'd normally throw in the FL-10 Dem hold too (YES at 95¢, we like it at 97¢), but the edge is thin and 5¢ of upside isn't worth the writeup. It's there if you want it.
GL out there. Bet boring, get paid.
